Matthews was born in the San Francisco Bay Area and started attending hockey games at the ripe age of two. He idolized Shan Doan and Daniel Brière. At this time in his life he was more fascinated with the Zamboni machine than he was with the actual sport of hockey. It wasn’t until he was five years old that he started to play in the Arizona Bobcats minor league team.
Matthews has earned many achievements here in the United States as well as in Switzerland. The NLA, which is the professional hockey league in Switzerland has recognized him as an NLA Rising Star. He is also a member of the Media All Star Team as well as the NLA’s Media Most Improved Player. In addition, he was also voted as the NLA Youngster of the Year. He earned all this accomplishments during the 2015-16 season. Here in the states the NHL has recognized him as the Rookie of the Month in December of 2016 as well as the NHL All Star in 2017, 2018 and 2019. He is also the recipient of the Calder Memorial Trophy.
Matthews recently did a photo shoot with GQ which gave him the chance to play dress up. He wore everything from a brown oversized jacket to a graphite grey suit with a black turtleneck. His style sense off the ice is simple and no frills. He likes to wear simple ripped jeans and t-shirts when he poses for photos with fans. He has also been spotted wearing fitted suits after games which helps add to his sophisticated look.
