Raised in Atlanta, Georgia, Al-Farouq led his high school, Norcross, to back to back State Championships. He was named Georgia's Mr. Basketball. The McDonald's All-American was No.7 in the nation and selected Wake Forest University to play college ball at. He was an unanimous ACC All-Freshmen team selection, and had 10 double-doubles that season. Al-Farouq returned to Wake Forest for his sophomore season, where he was named to the 2nd team All-ACC. In the 2010 NBA Draft, he was selected No.8 overall to the Los Angeles Clippers.
In addition, Al-Farouq represents Nigeria in international ball, competing in the 2012 Summer Olympics.
