Hassan Niam Whiteside
Born in Gastonia, North Carolina
Born and raised in Gastonia, North Carolina, Hassan Whiteside attended three high schools in two years. His senior year he played at The Patterson School in Lenoir, North Carolina. He helped Patterson reach a number one nation ranking. He chose Marshall University over several other top programs for college. He played one season at Marshall. When he declared for the 2010 NBA Draft, he had the nation’s attention.
Taken in the second round of the draft, Hassan found himself again under the radar. The Sacramento Kings took him with the 33rd pick. He played one game for the kings his rookie year. A knee injury suffered in the D-League sidelined him for the rest of the 2010-11 season. He saw a bit more action with the Kings in 2011 but by 2012 he was on the waiver wires. Hassan went abroad to develop his skills. He played in Lebanon and China from 2012 to 2014. In the beginning of the 2014 season, Hassan signed with the Miami Heat. In the second half of the season, Hassan arrived. He took the league by storm. By season's end, he'd averaged a double-double for the season. The 2016 season saw his selection to the NBA All-Defensive Second Team and a playoff berth for the Heat. Hassan led the league in rebounding in 2017. Since then, Hassan has become the face of the franchise, alongside an aging Dwyane Wade.
