‘The Bronze Bomber’, aka Deontay Wilder, may have one of the most powerful punches in the ring, but his beginnings were humble in his hometown of Tuscaloosa, Alabama. At a towering 6’7”, Wilder turned to boxing after his daughter was born with Spina Bifida and needed extra income to support her medical bills. The ring was a natural fit for Deontay. In just his 16th ammateur fight, he won the National Golden Gloves title and went on to win the U.S. Olympic trials. At the 2008 Beijing Olympic games, Wilder walked away with a bronze medal and a new nickname as the hard hitting ‘Bronze Bomber’.
Turning professional shortly after the Olympic games, his debut fight was a knockout win. A continuous knockout record of 30-0 in his early professional career lent an opportunity for Wilder to play with the big boys in 2014, his first shot at a world title. Twelve rounds later, Wilder squared up to current champion, Bermane Stiverne, he was the unanimous victor. Critics were silenced after this performance and Wilder has gone on to dominate big ticket pay per view fights. He’s undefeated in his 42 professional fights, all but two won by knockout.
The ‘Bronze Bomber’s’ style is as flashy as his nickname. In true fighter style, over the top chains that speak in diamonds is a staple in Deontay’s wardrobe. Sticking to a regal color palette, the majority of what he wears is either black, white or gold. As his style has progressed, Deontay states that his main goal is to insert ‘passion’ into everything he wears.
- Fighting for a good cause! Deontay dropped out of college to compete in boxing to support his daughter who was born with spina bifida
- Roll Tide! As a child growing up in Alabama, his dream was to play football from the Crimson Tide
- He’s got reach!! His arms reach is 83-inches
