Austin James Rivers
Santa Monica, CA
A third-generation NBA talent, Austin Rivers was born to play basketball. While he was born in Santa Monica, California, Austin played high school ball in Winter Park, Florida. An All-American player, he led his team to back-to-back State Championships and subsequently was named the Naismith Prep Player of the Year in 2011. Widely regarded as the nation’s top recruit, Rivers’ continued his career at the basketball powerhouse program, Duke University. Following in the tradition of top recruits, Austin only played one season with the Blue Devils before declaring for the 2012 NBA Draft. In a gray three-piece suit with a checkered deep red shirt, Rivers was selected as the 10th overall pick to the New Orleans Pelicans.
Playing two and a half seasons on a young Pelicans team, Rivers soon made history in a three-team trade in January 2015. Joining the team his father’s team, the Los Angeles Clippers, he became the first NBA player to ever be coached by his father. Despite battling various injuries, Rivers and the Clippers made it to the postseason in three consecutive years. Houston is where Austin calls his basketball home now and has seen great success. The Rockets have won 72% of their games since the signing of Austin.
As Rivers has matured in the league, he’s making a conscious effort to make sure his gameday fits appear “grown”. He describes his style as still having range, he sometimes falls back on his southern California roots of trendy streetwear and distressed jeans, but he much prefers to go beyond that. Self-proclaimed, ‘Mr. Suit’, Rivers’ prefers to communicate confidence in tailored suits for his pregame looks. Patek Phillipe is his watch brand of choice and overall prefers an understated, classic look when it comes to his accessories, so don’t look for an abundance of diamonds on this Rocket. Abiding to that classic, notion, most of his pieces exude a timeless finish. His most prized repeat item tho: a $7,000 forest-green suede jacket by Tom Ford.
- Austin was college teammates with Seth Curry, who eventually married Austin’s sister, Callie
- He got his first tattoo in the 9th grade!
- In November 2019, Austin was playing against his father’s Clippers team and Doc was ejected, to which Austin responded with a fabulous trolling action of waving goodbye from the court.
